Geneva Show: Rolls-Royce 101EX Debuts

GENEVA — Rolls-Royce has introduced the experimental 101EX, which the company says is intended "to explore a potential design direction for a future coupé model."

In fact, a two-door companion to the Phantom sedan is tentatively slated for production at the company's Goodwood factory in England in early 2009, about a year after the Phantom-based Rolls convertible commences production. The soft top was previewed at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show by the 100EX concept.

The 101EX is a four-passenger coupe built on a shortened version of the Phantom's chassis. The concept is 9.5 inches shorter than the Phantom sedan, with a lower roofline and shallower glass area. The 101EX rides on 21-inch wheels and tires.

The cockpit is finished in machined aluminum and leather, and trimmed in rosewood and red oak veneers. The concept features a so-called "starlight headliner" with hundreds of fiber-optic cables giving the impression of "a star-filled night sky," the company said.

What this means to you: Start saving your pounds and pence — a new two-door Roller is in the pipeline for '09.
