2008 Beijing Auto Show: Roewe 550

    0 Ratings
BEIJING — Shanghai Auto has introduced the midsize 550 sedan at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show, the second offering under its homegrown Roewe brand. Intended primarily for the Chinese domestic market, the Roewe 550 joins the original 750 in what eventually is intended to be a full range of premium models aimed at affluent Chinese consumers.

First displayed at last year's Shanghai show as the W2 concept, the 550 is about the size of a Honda Accord and is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. The cabin features a multimedia center digital display and GPS navigation and is trimmed in wood and chrome accents.

Shanghai Auto earlier this year absorbed Nanjing Auto, but so far there is no word as to whether an MG version of the 550 is planned for export markets.

What this means to you: This one looks much closer to prime time than its predecessor did. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
