TANGIER, Morocco — Renault has opened a $1.3-billion auto plant in Morocco, which it says is the largest in Northern Africa, capable of turning out 400,000 cars a year.

The new Tangier plant will begin building a version of the Dacia Lodgy, a compact crossover, and a small van that will be offered in commercial and passenger versions.

Renault's existing plant in Casablanca, which builds the Kangoo, the Logan and the Sandero, is operating at capacity.

The French automaker's two brands, Renault and Dacia, account for more than 37 percent of new-car sales in Morocco, where Renault began selling vehicles more than 80 years ago.

Renault said the Tangier factory is the world's first zero-carbon and zero-effluent auto plant, employing renewable energy and optimized wastewater treatment.

Inside Line says: Renault is well positioned strategically, with the Middle East North Africa (MENA) market just beginning to expand.
