2008 Paris Auto Show Preview: Renault Mégane Hatch

PARIS — Renault is using its home-town 2008 Paris Auto Show to unveil perhaps its most important global family of cars, the third-generation Mégane, which will duke it out in Europe and other markets with such C-segment competitors as the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf.

Although only the Mégane Hatch is being unveiled in Paris, the French automaker said the series will grow to six models by 2010, representing an investment of more than $2.5 billion.

The five-door Mégane Hatch will be powered by a range of direct-injection gasoline and turbodiesel engines, with the first vehicles to go on sale across Europe this fall after the Paris show.

The Mégane III is larger outside and roomier inside than its predecessor but is a shade lighter. The cabin boasts a combination of digital and analog instrumentation, as well as such features as hands-free entry and ignition, automatic locking and color-coded cruise control.

What this means to you: Once again, Renault shifts design gears, with the Mégane III spearheading a whole new family look for the French auto giant. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
