The model will be based off the three-door Mégane coupe, although the French automaker is considering a five-door variant as well. The model will take some exterior cues from the current Mégane R26, but the main inspiration was the Mégane Trophy racing car that debuted at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. The same center-mounted exhaust, drastic front end and flared wheel arches seen on the Trophy should carry over to the Renaultsport version.
Under the hood, the Volkswagen Scirocco rival will be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter that is in the Mégane R26, except the Renaultsport treatment gives it a 20-hp boost. This means 250 hp, and Autocar reports an estimated 0-60-mph time of just under 6 seconds.
Other performance enhancements include a double-axis front suspension that helps limit torque steer, big Brembo brakes, an optional limited-slip differential and recalibrated power steering.
Renault has yet to reveal pricing details. The vehicle is expected to reach dealerships this summer.
