NURBURG, Germany — A new Porsche Cayman prototype has been spotted on the Nürburgring and according to the shooters on the scene, there's more to it than its color scheme suggests.

At first glance, this test mule appears to be nothing more than a Cayman S Sport, but several details point to a more aggressive Cayman underneath. A fixed rear spoiler is the most obvious change, as the standard model uses a retractable wing. There's also some upgraded brake hardware visible through the unpainted, 10-spoke wheels. The standard Cayman S Sport has black wheels.

Given the amount of bare sheet metal visible inside the car, this Cayman is probably lighter than the standard models as well. An earlier prototype spotted on the Nürburgring revealed similar changes to the Porsche Boxster, suggesting that an RS package is a possibility for both models.

What this means to you: Porsche is looking to apply the RS treatment to more than just the 911. Whether this Cayman makes to the U.S. is still not assured. — Ed Hellwig, Lead Senior Editor
