STUTTGART, Germany — Porsche is expanding its stable of sports cars with a new midengined coupe dubbed the Cayman. Positioned between the Boxster and the 911, the Cayman is essentially a coupe version of the midengine Boxster, but a larger engine should help differentiate it from it convertible sibling.

Named for a small member of the crocodile family, the Cayman is expected to break cover officially this fall at the Frankfurt motor show.

The sole U.S. model, according to Porsche, will be the Cayman S, which will be fitted with a 295-hp, 3.4-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine. European customers also will be able to order a less-expensive variant with a 240-hp, 2.7-liter six.

In North America, the Cayman S will be priced above the Boxster S, which starts at $53,895.

What this means to you: If you like the Boxster's price and handling, but could do without its convertible look, the Cayman should prove to be the perfect alternative.
