Tuner Special: Rinspeed X-treme

ZUMIKON, Switzerland — When we last visited the Swiss eccentric Frank Rinderknecht, his Rinspeed shop was touting a wacky amphibious vehicle dubbed the sQuba. So what's all this about a relatively straightforward conversion of the Porsche Cayenne?

Despite its name, the Rinspeed X-treme looks surprisingly sedate, with a mild — at least by Rinspeed standards — aero body kit that bundles fat wheel arches, a front apron with ample air intakes, side skirts and a rear diffuser.

Rinspeed lowers the air suspension by 1.4 inches and offers a variety of custom wheels and tires in sizes up to 23 inches. An engine upgrade program kicks output to 600 horsepower.

Interior modifications include custom leather upholstery and a selection of infotainment systems.

What this means to you: Frank Rinderknecht gone straight? Say it ain't so. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
