    What is it?
    2008 Porsche Cayenne

    What's special about it?
A freshened look and more powerful direct-injection engines will grace Porsche's three new 2008 Cayenne models. Styling changes include new headlights, redesigned wheel arches and subtle sheet metal tweaks to the rest of the body.

Under the hood, a new direct-injection engine in each model is designed to make the Cayenne more powerful and more efficient. Base Cayenne models will be outfitted with a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 290 horsepower and 283 pound-feet of torque. Pricing for the base models starts at $43,400. The Cayenne S will utilize a 4.8-liter V8 rated at 385 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, and pricing begins at $57,900. At the top of the Cayenne food chain is the Turbo, which uses the same 4.8-liter V8 and employs two turbochargers to generate 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Turbo models start at $93,700.

Porsche claims the Turbo will hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and continue on to more than 170 mph.

Several new options up the Cayenne's technological wow factor beyond that of first-generation models. Porsche's Dynamic Chassis Control adds active antiroll bars that greatly reduce body roll and offer improved off-road grip. Dynamic Curve Lights are now standard on the Turbo and optional on other models. Porsche says they enhance nighttime visibility on winding roads. Porsche Stability Management is now standard equipment, as is Trailer Stability Control and an off-road antilock braking system.

A new rollover sensor can trigger the seatbelt tensioners and curtain airbags when activated.

    What's Edmunds' take?
Adding to the geek factor for all the new Cayenne models is a push-button Sport mode for — get this — the engine. We're guessing that's just in case the Turbo model's 500 hp isn't sporty enough. — Josh Jacquot
