If you want to see just how fast a 605-hp Porsche Carrera GT can get around a road course, Hurley Haywood is your man. With a résumé that includes five wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, three wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona and numerous other titles in the world of sports car endurance racing, Hurley knows his way around a racetrack.
He also happens to be the chief instructor at the Porsche Driving Experience, Porsche's official factory-sponsored driving school. Based at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, the Porsche Driving Experience gives you the chance to feel what it's like to push a 911 to its limits.
Not surprisingly, the Carrera GT isn't part of the school's curriculum. Put one into the wall and it's a $440,000 mistake. Since we don't have that kind of coin in our budget, we asked Hurley to show us how it's done around the road course at California Speedway.
With a 5.7-liter V10 mounted in its middle, a six-speed manual gearbox and a racecar-inspired carbon-fiber chassis, the Carrera GT was as at home on the track as Hurley. Enjoy the ride.
