LOS ANGELES — Saying that it is aiming its new 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder at purists, the German automaker on Wednesday hosted the world debut of its new open-top version of the Boxster at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The Boxster Spyder goes on sale in February and will be priced at $61,200 in the U.S. Unlike the special-edition Boxster Spyders from 2004 and 2008, the new Spyder is a specially developed full production model, according to the automaker.
The Boxster Spyder is outfitted with a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection. Output is 320 horsepower, 10 more than the Boxster S. Other details include the PDK transmission, a new sport suspension that lowers the Boxster Spyder 0.8 inch, a lower center of gravity and a standard limited-slip differential, as well as exclusive wheels.
The German automaker is describing the Boxster Spyder as the "quintessential purist Porsche."

Add $2,500 for the air-conditioner and radio - the first buyer may be a purist, but try selling a used car without A/C and a radio! Take out standard features, raise the price, and then offer the standard features as option . . . pure Porsche marketing. That's what they really mean by "purist."
What they really need is more horsepower. Put the 911 engine in the boxster/cayman twins, and make the "S" model the same car, but with a lot of nice options added in.
If they really want to sell more cars, they need to go back to the drawing board and look at the value proposition that they offer the consumer.
