This year's L.A. Auto Show had Porsche once again in its own room with the Boxster Spyder on a tilted revolving turntable. It is a lot like a regular Boxster but the addition of a rear deck with twin humps (with a brake light between) flared from the roll bars and a speedsteresque canvas top really adds some visual excitement to the fourteen-year old shape. Unfortunately there was no plaque with info to read about this Spyder and there should have been another car with the top raised. A matte-silver one with a tan canvas top and red leather is what I'd like to see.
There was a static display of the new Boxster engine and it was cut away to show the cooling passages and other internals which I found impressive compared to other engines at the show.
I always thought it too bad the Boxster family has no opening lid to see this engine since all car lovers enjoy showing off their car's motor at times. The way Audi's R8 displays its V-10 is great and this type of display of engine would be more in keeping with Porsche's heritage.
The rear 3/4 view is very nice with the way the rear fender flows up to the twin head rest farings.
There is a gap between the seat and the roll bar and a gap between the roll bar and the head rest faring that does not look as well integrated together. Having that funny little top installed hides this and makes the car look better from the side. The front is not as exciting because it looks like a "stock" Boxster but it at least it does not detract from the overall appearance. The "Boxster Spyder" logo on the rear lid seems too long. Why not just call it "Spyder"?
It would make a pretty nice toy for driving to the coast on weekends if you can afford $61,000 plus. I wonder about leaving it parked with a top that is only for sun/rain protection. Hopefully, if it is rare and becomes desireable, in the future it might be have collector value but who knows. For another $140,000 the Mercedes Gull-Wing is about as nice as they get and you have your choice of two shades of matte-silver.
