STUTTGART, Germany — Porsche is proud to say that 33 cars with its legendary 911 six-cylinder boxer engine will compete in the Nurburgring 24 Hours, which takes place May 15 and 16. Among them will be the new 911 GT3 R piloted by the defending champions, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and teammates Marc Lieb and Marcel Tiemann.
The hybrid version of the 911 GT3 R will be raced at the Nurburgring by Porsche works drivers Jorg Bergmeister and Richard Lietz, as well as by Marco Holzer and Martin Ragginger for Porsche Team Manthey. Porsche admits it's not looking to be a strong competitor with the hybrid but to gain "data that our race lab delivers for the further development of hybrid technology."
Another interesting entry is a road-going 450-horsepower 911 GT3 RS "right from the showroom" entered by former DTM driver Rold Asch, TV commentator Patrick Simon and journalists Horst von Saurma and Chris Harris.
Porsche is making it possible for fans of the marque to get hourly updates on the endurance race online. Commentator Burkhard Bechtel will give a 10-minute update each hour during the race and will conduct trackside interviews. Sorry, it's in German only.
