This is Ed Hellwig, editor of inside Line and this week we have the latest spy video of the 2012 Porsche 911. Known internally as the 998, the next generation 911 is expected to shed weight in an effort to improve its performance without adding power. Judging from the looks of these prototypes that were caught cold weather testing near the Arctic circle, there won't be any drastic styling changes. Expect to see slightly wider tracks front and rear and a lower roofline, but the overall length and wheelbase will remain roughly the same. After a thorough redesign of the company's flat six engine a few years ago, the 998 isn't likely to see any big changes in the engine department either. Since improving efficiency is a major goal for the 911 this time around, expect to see only modest horsepower gains from both the standard 3.6 and the optional 3.8 liter engines. The official unveil of the new 911 is expected this fall at the Frankfurt auto show with U.S. sales likely to start in the spring of 2012.
