ATLANTA — The face-lifted 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo will debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show in September, the German automaker confirmed on Friday. Porsche, uncharacteristically, is putting the emphasis on the 911 Turbo's fuel economy, saying in a statement that it "continues to create more from less."
However, the car's actual fuel economy remains a mystery, since neither Porsche nor the EPA have released any official numbers. The EPA says the 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo with a five-speed automatic transmission returns 15 miles per gallon in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway. In Europe, the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo averages 21 mpg under the EU5 standard.
"The new 911 Turbo reduces CO2 emissions by almost 18 percent compared to its predecessor while using significantly less fuel," said Porsche Cars North America in a statement.
The 2010 911 Turbo gets a new 494-horsepower 3.8-liter flat-6 boxer engine, an increase of 20 hp over the outgoing model, and delivers 516 pound-feet of torque. Top track speed is 194 mph for both versions of the car. The 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo sprints from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.4 seconds.
Options on the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo include a Sport Chrono Package Turbo that includes dynamic engine mounts that Porsche says automatically adjusts magnetic fluid "for comfort or sport, depending on the driving conditions."
Another option is a three-spoke steering wheel with gearshift paddles and Porsche Torque Vectoring, a system that includes a mechanical limited-slip differential that distributes power between the rear wheels. Porsche said this makes "the car even more agile and precise in corners for an even higher level of driving pleasure."
Porsche Cars North America says the 2010 Turbo Coupe and Turbo Cabriolet go on sale in January. The Turbo Coupe starts at $132,800, while the Turbo Cabriolet starts at $143,800.
Inside Line says: Fuel-economy numbers are becoming as critical as horsepower, even in Porsche's rarefied world. But we still are waiting to see just what they are on the new 911 Turbo. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
