STUTTGART, Germany — A few weeks after the debut of the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera, the German automaker has unwrapped its all-wheel-drive companions, 911 Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, in both coupe and convertible variants.

The Carrera 4/4S, which arrive at U.S. dealers in late October, get many of the same styling tweaks as their rear-wheel-drive siblings, including new bi-xenon headlamps and LED taillamps.

Unique to the Carrera 4/4S is a new electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system that bundles Porsche Traction Management (PTM) with a mechanical rear differential.

Porsche's new direct-injection flat-6 engines and the optional seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox also are being fitted to the Carrera 4/4S. The 3.6-liter engine develops 341 horsepower, while the 3.8-liter makes 380 hp. Porsche says the engine provides more power, better fuel economy and lower emissions. The Carrera 4 Coupe with the 3.6-liter six and seven-speed PDK returns an average 23 mpg, according to the company.

The 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe is priced at $81,700, while both the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet and 911 Carrera 4S Coupe are $92,300. The 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet is $102,900.

What this means to you: Prices have risen slightly over the 2008 models. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
