2009 Frankfurt Auto Show Preview: Porsche 911 Sport Classic

STUTTGART, Germany — The Porsche 911 Sport Classic will join several new 911-based siblings on the German automaker's stand at the upcoming 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The limited-edition 911 Sport Classic, which will not be marketed in North America, will be built in a run of only 250 cars and will go on sale in January, priced from $240,500.

The 911 Sport Classic is the creation of the Porsche Exclusive special department and is based on the rear-drive Carrera S, with the wider rear body of the Carrera 4S. In addition to the wider rear track, visual cues include a SportDesign front apron with lip spoiler, a fixed "ducktail" rear spoiler, a new double-dome roof and custom five-spoke 19-inch wheels with black-painted centers. The exterior is finished in Sport Classic Gray.

Porsche Exclusive has put its expertise to work in the cockpit as well, fitting new adaptive sport seats upholstered in woven leather with light-gray piping. The dashboard is finished in natural leather.

The 911 Sport Classic gets a 408-horsepower version of the 3.8-liter flat-6 engine that is an option in the Carrera S, and will be offered only with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Standard hardware includes Porsche ceramic composite brakes, a mechanical locking rear differential and PASM sport suspension, which lowers ride height by 0.8 inch.

Inside Line says: Despite the ballyhoo surrounding the Panamera (or perhaps because of it), Porsche has chosen to focus the Frankfurt spotlight on the evergreen 911 and all its latest variants, including the new 911 Turbo, the 911 GT3 RS and the 911 GT3 Cup. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
