The 911 GT3 joins a growing family of models. The iconic Porsche 911 is now available in open- and closed-top versions, with two- or four-wheel drive, and normally aspirated or turbocharged, not to mention in various racing iterations and in road-going versions of its club-sports racers.
While the Turbo — also making its debut here — is all about power in a luxurious package, the GT3 is all about raw power. Porsche engineers squeezed out 415 horsepower from the 3.6-liter flat-six engine. The power plant revs 7,600 times per minutes to reach this figure, and its limit has been raised to 8,400 rpm. It is no wonder that various engine parts have been enlarged, replaced or tweaked to cope with the increased stress. The engine is coupled with a revised six-speed transmission.
The GT3 has Porsche's Active Suspension Management System and a traction control system lifted from the exotic Carrera GT super sports car.
As the GT3 is mainly intended for the racetrack, it is a strict two-seater and there is the possibility of adding a roll cage. Its exterior also highlights racing intent with its huge spoilers, fat 19-inch wheels and hood scoop.
What this means to you: Many Porsche fans now have only one wish: to combine the power plant of the Turbo with the body of the GT3.
