2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S
What's special about it?
The 911 Carrera 4S is basically a 911 Turbo without the turbo. In other words, the 4S gets virtually the same body, chassis and feature upgrades that the Turbo has over the basic 911. Replacing the Carrera 4 coupe and listing at $80,200, the 4S is also around $35,000 less than the Turbo.
Looking at the two side-by-side reveals that the bodies are similar, but a closer look shows that the Carrera 4S has a different front spoiler and lacks the side air intakes and big rear spoiler of the Turbo. To set the rear end apart from the base 911, the 4S features an exclusive reflector panel between the taillights.
Luxury features are shared between the two cars, as well, with the 4S owner enjoying the same power-adjusted sport seats and programmable remote entry system.
As indicated by the "4" in the car's name, the Carrera 4S has all-wheel drive, so as to afford even more tenacious handling than the two-wheel-drive 911. The 4S also has the upgraded 13-inch drilled brakes with red calipers, tweaked suspension and 18-inch wheels as the Turbo. Tire sizes measure 225/40 in front and 285/30 in back.
Why should you care?
A cheaper (maybe not the best word) version of a 911 Turbo that offers all the goodness of that car minus the force-fed flat six, meaning you'll have to get by with a car that has just 320 horsepower and a top speed of 174 mph. Our hearts bleed. John DiPietro
