TORRANCE, California — In one of the bigger recalls in the U.S. this year, Toyota and General Motors are recalling 2003-'04 Corolla, Matrix and Pontiac Vibe models to fix defects in power windows.

Toyota issued a statement on Wednesday saying its safety recall involves about 539,500 Corolla and Matrix models sold in the U.S. Similarly, GM said it will recall 122,598 Vibes, which share a platform with the Matrix.

"On certain 2003 and 2004 model-year Corolla and Matrix vehicles equipped with power windows, the driver and front passenger door glass bolts may loosen and come off, causing the door glass to separate from the window regulator," said Toyota. "Vehicles that are equipped with manual windows are not involved in this campaign."

Toyota noted that an "abnormal noise may be heard from the driver and/or front passenger door when operating the power windows."

The automaker will notify owners of the recall beginning in late April. Replacement of the driver and front passenger door glass bolts will be done at no charge to the owners. For more information, owners can contact Toyota at (800) 331-4331.
