2002 Pontiac Vibe
What's special about it?
After missing the mark with the ill-fated Aztek, Pontiac is hoping to smooth things over with the equally radical, but shaplier Vibe. One part sports car, one part SUV, and one part sport wagon, the Vibe is aimed directly at the youthful customers that Pontiac has traditionally targeted for GM.
It features a four-cylinder 130-horsepower engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and an available all-wheel-drive system (a more powerful, manual version is set for introduction in Detroit next week). The interior features chrome-rimmed gauges and traditional Pontiac red backlighting along with seats that can be flipped and folded for a variety of interior configurations. For those of you who can never seem to remember those pesky cigarette lighter power cords, the Vibe features a 110-volt household power outlet right in the dash did it really take until the 21st century to figure that out?
The idea of blending a sport wagon and an SUV never really caught on with the Aztek, but the Vibe might just have the combination of size, utility, and style that Pontiac needs to bolster its youth appeal.
Why should you care?
GM is making an honest effort to bring new, innovative vehicles to market and the Vibe might just be the first one that actually proves to be a hit.
