Feds Investigate Complaints About Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky Brakes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A preliminary investigation has been opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to look into complaints that brakes on the 2008 Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky with 2.0-liter turbocharged engines may require "excessive pedal effort" to stop.

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation says it has received 40 complaints "alleging inadequate brake power assist," according to a recent posting on the government agency's Web site. "The complainants allege excessive brake pedal effort is required to stop the vehicle on initial applications following a cold start, typically in a driveway or parking lot," it said. It says one crash may have resulted from the alleged defect.

The posting notes that General Motors issued a technical service bulletin in December, advising dealers about recalibrating brake control modules.

The NHTSA says it is looking into "the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect" in the 2008 Solstice and Sky. A preliminary investigation can lead to a safety recall or the agency can drop the investigation if it finds no reason for further study.

What this means to you: If you own one of the aforementioned vehicles, be aware that the feds are checking the brakes. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
