April, 1998 -- Pontiac introduced a sporty coupe version of their best-selling model this week at the New York International Automobile Show in Manhattan. Dubbed the Grand AM GT, this trim level is supposed to appeal to young buyers who are interested in style and performance.
Differences between the standard SE and the new GT include unique GT styling up front, at the back, and on the sides; 16-inch wheels and tires, a 3.4-liter V6 engine with Ram Air, and a 3.29:1 final drive ratio. The engine makes 175 horsepower and 205 foot-pounds of torque and works with the final drive ratio to propel the GT to 60 mph in less than 8 seconds. An upgraded suspension, sticky V-rated tires, and 4-wheel disc brakes further separate the GT from the ordinary SE models, offering drivers greater control.
