2010 Pontiac G8 ST Will Get V6 and V8 Engines

DETROIT — Contrary to what Pontiac has announced thus far, the newly named 2010 Pontiac G8 ST quasi-pickup truck will be offered with both V8 and V6 engine options.

Pontiac's plan was to offer the ST with only the 361-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 from the G8 GT sedan. But according to a highly placed engineer at The General, the company will bow to fuel economy pressures and also offer the 3.6-liter V6 when the ST goes on sale late in 2009 as a 2010 model.

The 3.6-liter will not, however, be the same 256-hp unit that is currently the base motor for the G8 sedan. Instead, the ST and (beginning with the 2010 model year) the sedan will get the direct-injection version of the 3.6-liter that makes slightly more than 300 hp in various applications, including the base Camaro motor and the upgrade Cadillac CTS engine.

What this means to you: If you buy a 2010 or later base sedan or ST, you might not get stomped by Nissan Altima SEs at impromptu stop-light drag races. — Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit
