DETROIT — Hoping to capitalize on the rapid runup in small-car sales, Pontiac on Thursday confirmed plans to sell a version of the Korea-built Chevrolet Aveo, rebadged as the G3, next spring in the U.S.
The move had been rumored for several months, after the EPA listed the 2009 Pontiac G3 Wave in its 2009 Fuel Economy Guide in May.
Pontiac dealers in Canada are already selling the G3 Wave, which is a near clone of the Aveo but with a Pontiac nose. General Motors dealers in Mexico market a G3 sedan.
In the U.S., Pontiac will offer the 2009 G3 only as a five-door hatchback, powered by a 106-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The EPA rates the G3 with five-speed manual transmission at 27 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. With the optional four-speed automatic, the car is rated at 25/34 mpg.
Pontiac did not release U.S. pricing but said the car will be well equipped, with standard air-conditioning, CD player with iPod jack, foglamps, rear spoiler and four airbags.
