The Aztek was first on a list of the 100 ugliest cars ever made as decided by reader votes. The top 20 included a thorough mix of the notoriously ugly — AMC Pacer, Ford Edsel, Ford Scorpio — and popular modern rides such as the Audi Q7, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Porsche Cayenne. Not surprisingly, the Aztek's chief competitor was the Fiat Multipla, an awkward fusion of square and round elements. According to the Daily Telegraph, the Fiat maintained a comfortable lead until voters discovered the Aztek — which was never sold in Europe — and a wave of votes poured in.
In 2007, the Aztek was listed as one of Time magazine's 50 Worst Cars of All Time. Although the Pontiac never met sales expectations and was widely criticized for its styling, it did score high in Consumer Satisfaction Index ratings and was named Most Appealing Entry Sport-Utility Vehicle by J.D. Power in 2001.
What this means to you: The Aztek may just be the Ford Edsel of our time, so don't expect this to be the last time you hear it called ugly. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
