2009 Frankfurt Auto Show Preview: Peugeot RCZ

PARIS — Peugeot has released images of its RCZ sport coupe, the production version of a well-received earlier concept from the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. This car, the first Peugeot product not to have a three-digit name with a 0 in the center, will be launched at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show and is set for an on-sale date next spring.

The compact 2+2 coupe will come with four engine options, three of which will be available at launch. At the top is an all-new 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine making 200 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Next summer, Peugeot will add a 1.6-liter turbo engine making 156 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, paired with an all-new six-speed sequential automatic transmission.

Peugeot's Sound System technology optimizes engine noise by changing the sound as speed changes, "just like a musical instrument."

The RCZ also comes with Hill Assist, intelligent traction control, dynamic stability control, electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist.

Visually, the RCZ is notable for its aluminum double-bubble arched roof and an active rear spoiler that deploys in two positions. There's an optional carbon-fiber roof, a choice of different-colored roof arches and 18- or 19-inch wheels in several finishes.

The interior has wraparound seats with integrated headrests, a metal-cased instrument panel and Napa leather trim. The rear gets a set of "occasional" seats that fold down. Electronic gadgetry includes Peugeot Connect 3D multimedia with USB interface and JBL stereo as well as the Peugeot Assistance/Peugeot Urgence security service.

Inside Line says: The sexy coupe should be a popular addition to the Peugeot line. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
