    Just the Facts:
    • Peugeot's 3008 Hybrid4 will likely be the first diesel-electric hybrid to market in spring 2011.
    • The production car's official debut comes at the Paris auto show.
    • It combines a front-mounted 2.0-liter diesel-4 with a rear-mounted electric motor and battery pack.

PARIS — When Peugeot brings the 3008 Hybrid4 to market in Europe next spring, it will be the world's first production diesel-electric hybrid. The 3008 Hybrid4 will be displayed this fall at the 2010 Paris Auto Show about a year and a half after the car made its debut in concept form at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 is a crossover model based on the 308 hatchback and fitted with twin powertrains. It has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel rated at 163 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque in front, and an electric motor rated at 37 hp and 148 lb-ft in the rear. Combined output is 200 hp, and combined torque is 369 lb-ft. The diesel engine is connected to a six-speed automated manual gearbox.

Peugeot said the combination delivers fuel economy of up to 62 mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km on the European test cycle. Drivers can select from one of four modes: Auto, ZEV (all-electric), 4WD and Sport. A nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack is located in the rear.

The 3008 Hybrid4 goes into production in France in spring 2011.

I currently own a 2008 Mercury Mariner Gasoline-Electric Hybrid, so I think the next step would be a Diesel-Electric Hybrid.  The Peugeot 3008 seems to be the ticket...but it won't be available in the US!  I was hoping that Audi would make a Diesel-Electric Q5, but that seems not to be in the works...

The problem with this combo is two fold.  One, is that the deisel powerplant and the electric motor already share similar benefits in low end grunt.  No performance gains are capable here.  Two it has to be expensive to marry these two technologies, and I don't see the fuel savings being worth it, since as I said early these two share similar benefits where mileage can be gained.  This is why gas has always worked better with hybrids.  The division of tasks makes gains in economy much higher.

Nice.  I hope GM puts a diesel in the Volt soon.  That will knock MPG's sky high.

Will watch with interest.  Seems a diesel coupled to an electric motor would deliver outstanding economy.
