2008 Beijing Auto Show: Peugeot Kicks Off a China-Centric Design Contest

BEIJING — In an unusual twist to its annual search for a cool concept car, French automaker Peugeot announced the competition at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show and said the winning entry will be presented at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show. It's the first time that Peugeot's design competition has kicked off outside of Europe.

The automaker said it is looking for "a concept car to be designed for use in the center of the great urban cities of the future, while embracing the key values of the 21st century and, at the same time, bearing all of Peugeot's recognized styling cues." The tall order includes a vehicle that melds "environmental friendliness, social harmony, interactive mobility and economic efficiency."

Entries can be submitted to the design section of the Peugeot Web site from May 30 to July 20. Internet voters will pick the top 10 finalists. The winner will be announced on October 2 at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. Peugeot will then build a full-scale model of the concept.

The winner gets €10,000 (the current equivalent of $15,990), an Xbox 360 games console and lots of media attention.

Peugeot said the average age of the young designers who participate in the contest is 22. The participants come from 113 countries.

What this means to you: Time to get busy submitting your entry into this increasingly lucrative and prestigious contest. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
