Opel Astra Coupe OPC X-treme Concept
What's special about it?
Based on Opel's Astra coupe that competes in the German Touring Car Masters series, this road-going version sports dramatic gullwing doors and road-hugging bodywork that give it a dramatic profile that stood out even amongst the many and varied creations that lined the Geneva show floor.
The car is actually a product of the OPC (Opel Performance Center). Think of it as GM's equivalent to Ford's SVT or Mercedes' AMG performance divisions. It tuned this road-going dream machine to produce 440 horsepower from its 4.0-liter V8. Power is sent to the ground via a six-speed transaxle and massive 20-inch wheels. Specially developed tires are sized 265/30ZR20 up front and 305/25ZR20 in the rear.
Why should you care?
For no other reason than to realize that GM actually does build some radically cool cars. Too bad Europe gets the Astra, and we're forced to stomach the Grand Prix and Cavalier Z24. If GM could import some of Opel's design flair to the States, it might stand a chance at reversing its slowly declining market share. Ed Hellwig
