    Super Luxury Bravada Concept Debuts

January 6, 1998 -- We arrived somewhat late for the Oldsmobile press conference at the 1998 North American International Auto Show in Detroit today. A gold Bravada sat on the display stand, twinkling under floodlights and photographers' flash bulbs. The spokesman on stage was discussing the concept SUV, telling assembled scribes about the lower ride height, supercharged 245-horsepower 4.3-liter V-6 engine, 17-inch wheels and tires, office-on-wheels system with built-in IBM computer, entertainment package with VCR and seven-inch LCD roof-mounted screen, Monsoon sound system, and unique Cargo Max system that slides out to ease loading and facilitate tailgate parties.

The spokesman kept referring to the Bravada as the exscape. At first we thought perhaps he'd never been taught how to say the word "escape." Naw, these corporate P.R. types are better educated than that. So then we deducted that his microphone must be distorting his speech. But all other spoken utterances were transmitted loud and clear. Then we noticed the vanity plate on the back of the Olds concept. It said X-scape. Great concept vehicle. Stupid name.
