LAS VEGAS — With the all-new 370Z poised to hit U.S. showrooms shortly, Nissan focused a portion of its 2008 SEMA Show display on Z cars but also extended its vision to hybrids, racing cars and off-road vehicles.
Perhaps the most unusual item was the Z Highboy Roadster, built by Nissan employee Jack Taylor using a 300ZX drivetrain. It's patterned on a classic 1932 Ford Highboy Roadster. Taylor, who works in customer satisfaction and loyalty, initially conceived a twin-turbo engine, but packaging issues persuaded him to use a normally aspirated power plant. The Z Highboy features a Downs fiberglass body.
Among the race-oriented Z cars was the Time Attack 350Z, prepped by Japan's Mines Performance and the Westside Group, as well as the fully prepped Rick Kulach Racing 350Z.
Another race-oriented vehicle on the Nissan stand was the Steve Millen Maxima with such Stillen mods as roof and deck-lid spoilers, custom wheels and tires and a two-tone black-and-silver paint scheme.
An electric supercharger boosts performance on the E85-fueled Altima Hot Rod Hybrid from Braille Battery, which added race-inspired interior enhancements and an eco-focused paint job.
Nissan's Rogue compact crossover received the once-over from Automotive Design Concepts, including a suspension lift, oversize snow tires, engine modifications and a full complement of lifestyle accessories.
Inside Line says: Guess we'll have to wait until next year to see the aftermarket potential of the 370Z. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
