- Nissan releases a teaser sketch of the next-gen Versa.
- The automaker says only that the new Versa will be sold "in the Americas."
- Future Versa could share mechanicals with the new Smart five-door.
FRANKLIN, Tennessee — Nissan said its next-generation Versa compact will be "sold in the Americas" and released a teaser sketch.
Nissan provided no other details.
The next Versa is expected to arrive in the U.S. as a 2012 model. Like the current car, the new Versa will be assembled at Nissan's plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
But while the current Versa is a version of the home-market Nissan Tiida, built on Renault-Nissan's global B platform, the 2012 Versa is expected to shift to the newer, smaller V platform that underpins the recently redesigned Nissan March/Micra.
That would mean the next-generation Versa would likely share its underpinnings with the new Smart five-door hatchback that Nissan will build in Mexico for Daimler, beginning in late 2011.

The Versa is a great product and one of the best small cars you can buy. I'd hope for some attention to styling which from the sketches, looks like has been tended too. Can't wait to see the new Versa.

Looks promising and solid entry-level car for Nissan. Where most other small cars come up short, the current Versa excels, such as comfort, fit and finish, ride, and roominess. I hope they will replicate this with the new generation and add a little more performance, better fuel economy, more overall "Nissan-ness."

The Versa is the one car Nissan makes that I don't like. I am sure the new version will change that. Nissan makes great cars. Hope they keep it up. The new Quest looks amazing too.

Interesting timing for this news release from Nissan, a few days ago it was reported that the Nissan Versa got only two stars in the new NHTSA crash test.
This means they are not going to revise the current Versa to improve the crash test score?

You'd be surprised how many cars are made in Mexico...

Not going to happen. The new design will have some aspects of this sketch, but really won't be close. I hope I;m wrong, because this sketch makes this entry compact look quite sporty.
Enough with the civic comments, the new Focus is already better in everyway, and the upcomming SI can't even compare to the soon to be released Focus ST.
The civic looks like a rabbit, and I don't mean a VW, hence the reason why it's a chick car.

Looks like Honda keeps slowly moving away from performance and going all out when it comes to fuel economy. Then again who's bought a Honda for any real performance lately? I for one think this is a step in the right direction for commuters but a sad day for Honda performance fans.
I for one like a little pep in the cars that I drive. Granted, I can't drive like I want to most of the time but it's nice to know the power is there.

Wow it looks like a Fit/Insight on the front and a neon from the rear.
Dual clutch!
They are not working on the performance but focusing on fuel economy. Those of you Honda Civic SI fans are not going to get any faster!
