Face-Lifted Nissan Tiida in Japan Doesn't Hint at Next Versa for U.S.

TOKYO — Don't think for a second that scrutinizing the changes to the Nissan Tiida — news of which was released in Japan on Monday — will give you major clues as to the shape and look of its North American sibling, the Nissan Versa.

"This update to the Tiida is not going to be our update," Nissan North America Spokesman Darryll Harrison told Inside Line. "What we'll end up getting won't be the same as Japan." Harrison was reluctant to divulge any more than that, saying he could not disclose "when we're due" for an update to the Nissan Versa or what that update will look like. "The Tiida updates are based on feedback from the Japanese market," he said.

The redesigned Tiida in Japan includes an exterior and interior face-lift, retuned electric power steering, powertrain enhancements and a new "Plus navi HDD" package. The Tiida and Tiida Latio compacts get new grilles, front bumpers and headlights and new wheel-cover designs. The instrument clusters now get an orange-hued illumination and a fuel consumption display.

Powertrain enhancements include the new availability of a six-speed manual transmission on 1.8-liter models, something that is already available on the 2008 Nissan Versa 1.8-liter models, Harrison noted.
