LOS ANGELES-Nissan unveiled their restyled Pathfinder at the Los Angeles Auto Show today, giving the model its first real image update since its total redesign in 1996. The 1999.5 model is designed to make the truck more competitive with the slew of sport-utility vehicles that have flooded the market in recent years. Nissan's market share has been slipping across the board in recent years due to increased competition and an aging vehicle lineup.
The most noticeable change to the '99.5 Pathfinder is at the front of the vehicle, where a new grille, headlamps, bumper and fascia give the truck a more rugged appearance. The rear of the truck also gets an update, including changes to the tailgate, bumper, and taillamps.
Nissan also juggles the trim lines of the Pathfinder, replacing the SE trim level designation with the SE Limited, and offering two-wheel drive in every trim level. Until this restyle, Nissan had not offered 2WD in the SE trim level.
The Pathfinder's innards are unchanged for 1999.5, meaning that it is still powered by a 3.3-liter V6 engine that makes only 170 horsepower. A five-speed manual is standard on the SE Limited. An automatic is optional on SE Limited and is standard on the XE and LE models.
Nissan has not released pricing for the 1999.5 models. Models are expected to appear in showrooms in late February.
