TOKYO — Nissan's redesigned sporty 2008 Note, which the Japanese automaker describes as a small wagon/crossover, will hit showrooms in Japan on January 16. But "right now, there are no plans to bring it stateside," Nissan North America spokesman Darryll Harrison told Inside Line.

Nissan beefed up the Note's lineup for '08, adding a high-tech "Plus navi HDD" version to the Note 15G, 15G Four, 15X and 15X Four models. This version adds an HDD-based navigation system with such items as a high-speed, large-capacity 30GB hard disk drive, a 7-inch LCD monitor, iPod control, CD player, AM/FM radio, green-tinted windshield and two rear speakers.

The redesigned Note gets a new front end with new headlights, hood, grille and bumper. In the cabin, there's a new instrument panel with standard white-faced gauges on the sporty 15RX and 15RS. A leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel with red stitching is standard on the 15RX. The Note is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission.

What this means to you: This is one Nissan you'll have to admire from a distance. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
