Nissan Set To Kick Off Local Production in Vietnam

    0 Ratings
HANOI, Vietnam — It's hard to imagine Hanoi as one of the hotbeds of auto production, but it appears to be heading in that direction. Nissan Vietnam Co. Ltd. on Tuesday said it will start local production and launch its first model assembled in Vietnam by 2010.

No exports are planned thus far. Nissan did not specify which model it will build in Vietnam.

"Vietnam is a strategic market for Nissan with tremendous opportunities," said Shinya Hannya, Nissan corporate vice president of GOM planning, GOM marketing and sales (Asia and Oceania). "We are aiming for strengthening our market presence in Vietnam as well as in other fast-emerging countries."

The Nissan model will be assembled by Vietnam Motors, an existing auto assembler, and will be distributed by Nissan Vietnam.

Inside Line says: Vietnam is a growing market, with incomes and aspirations for new vehicles. Expect other automakers to follow. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
