2004 Nissan Maxima
What's Special About It?
Apparently Nissan has realized what a mistake it was to drop the "four-door sports car" designation from the Maxima. Capitalizing on the success of the sleek and performance-oriented Altima, the new Maxima shares more of its younger sibling's styling cues, and will be built in the U.S. alongside the Altima in Tennessee. The Maxima will carry the family styling cues in other ways as the taillights have a bit of a Z look to them.
Nissan's buttery smooth and impressively powerful 3.5-liter V6 will still power the Maxima, but we expect power to jump into the 260 range. Nissan is promoting the new Maxima as " the soul of the Z®, wrapped in a muscular premium sports sedan design." Sounds like a four-door sports car to us.
Look for the new Maxima to go on sale in March of 2003 as a 2004 model priced in the $30,000 range.
Why Should You Care?
With Nissan's recent track record, the new Maxima could live up to all the hype. Toyota seems content to build (for the most part) Japanese Buicks and has intentionally left itself out of the horsepower wars. To find a suitable counterpart to the racier, more powerful Maxima, one would have to look to the expensive European brands or the equally pricey Lexus GS. Brian Moody
