TOKYO — The electric Nissan Leaf took home Japan's Car of the Year prize at the close of the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show, the third such award for the electric car in a year. It is also the first time an electric car has picked up the prestigious trophy in Japan.
Nissan said it has sold 20,000 Leafs since the car's market launch at the end of last year.
The Leaf also won European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year. The Chevrolet Volt beat out the Leaf for the 2011 North American Car of the Year.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan and wagon edged the Peugeot 508 to win the Japan Import Car of the Year title. The Mazda Demio (Mazda 2) SkyActiv received the Japan Car of the Year Executive Committee Special Prize for its new SkyActiv engine technology.

Congrats to Nissan though. Japan's Car of the Year, European Car of the Year and World Car of the Year; those are some pretty impressive accolades for the Leaf to have under its belt.
