SYDNEY, Australia — As part of an ongoing global rollout, the Nissan Leaf arrives next June in Australia, priced from $51,850 — nearly $16,000 more than the base sticker on its American counterpart.

The 2012 Leaf in the U.S. starts at $36,050, including an $850 shipping charge, reflecting a $2,420 price hike over the 2011 model.

In Australia, the Leaf will compete against the Mitsubishi i, which is priced from $49,125, and the upcoming Holden Volt, which is expected to carry a base sticker of around $60,000, according to local media reports.

Nissan's parent company, French automaker Renault, also is expected to enter the EV market in Australia with the Fluence ZE.

Nissan has sold more than 20,000 Leafs worldwide since the car's introduction a year ago.

Inside Line says: A stiff price for first-mover — or, in this case, second-mover — status.

Merry CHRISTmas and a Happy New Year to you (and all)!   We don't always disagree and love the banter.  I believe that most comments sometimes can be more informative, passionate and fun than the articles themself.

Now the article $50k for a tin can is pretty funny.  Now, $40k for a Chrysler Luxury Edition 300c at 31MPG, isn't so bad.  I know it's down under but really $50k as indicated in COMMENTS not the ARTICLE, it just doesn't make $en$e.

    J.M.O... I could be wrong

$51Gs. Makes no sense to ordinary work folks. It will take decades of driving and still be more expensive than a gasoline equivalent!

To all of my friends on the IL blog,

I know during the year we may disagree about which car is best, but in the true spirit of the season I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas.
