VANCOUVER, Canada — The 2010 Winter Olympic Games kick off tonight and the event that is being dubbed the "green Olympics" because of unusually warm weather is also poised to be a platform for such green vehicles as the 2011 Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt.
Nissan will debut a new Nissan brand TV commercial during the high-profile opening ceremonies on Friday night that showcases the entire lineup and ends with a focus on the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle. Nissan said that the Leaf will also have a homepage takeover on Yahoo! on February 15 during the Olympics buy.
The Chevrolet Volt has been part of the run-up to the Olympics, according to a posting on the GM FastLane blog by Marc Comeau, vice president of Chevrolet's Canada arm. The Volt is part of BC Hydro's Power Smart Village in the "Home of the Future" display.
"The Volt will be on display at the 'Home of the Future' daily in the late afternoon, so please come out to take a look," Comeau wrote.
Audi of America is also launching a multipronged marketing and advertising push during the Olympic Games, following its "Green Police" ad during last week's Super Bowl. It has developed two new ads — "Spell" and "Friendly Competition" — that will debut on Friday and continue throughout the games.
The 30-second "Friendly Competition" spot showcases the Audi A6, Q5 and S4 and is "based on the notion that in every competition, someone, or something, falls short," Audi said in a statement.
The Audi R8 5.2 FSI, A5 cabriolet, S4 and Q5 are part of the "Spell" ad.
"This ad centers on the premise that we've been taught to desire certain things, whether a boring SUV, a fiery Italian sports car, or simply a status symbol that our neighbors will notice," say Audi officials.
Audi also said it will produce a daily behind-the-scenes Webcast powered by Justin.tv from the U.S. Ski Team House in Whistler, British Columbia during the 2010 Winter Games. The Webisodes will kick off on February 13 at 6:30 p.m. PT/9:30 p.m. ET and stream at the same time each day through Feb. 27 at Audi's Facebook page, Justin.tv and the U.S. Ski Team Web site.
Inside Line says: The rain and warm temperatures may disappoint fans of the Winter Games, but they provide a perfect backdrop for some of the greenest cars on the planet. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
