TOKYO — Nissan has added a mini-SUV to its Japanese domestic lineup. The Kix goes on sale in late October in the home market, courtesy of virtual partner Mitsubishi.
Following longstanding practice in Japan, Mitsubishi is supplying Nissan with a version of its boxy Pajero Mini, which Nissan in turn is rebadging, with only modest exterior changes, as the Kix.
In Japan, the practice is referred to broadly as "an OEM agreement," where one manufacturer agrees to build and share a version of one of its vehicles with a competitor.
Nissan hasn't released any details on the Kix, but the Pajero Mini comes with a choice of tiny 660cc engines, including a 63-horsepower turbo variant and a 51-hp normally aspirated unit.
What this means to you: Gosh, maybe Ford could share the Taurus with Chrysler. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
