    FRANKLIN, Tennessee — The 2011 Nissan Juke will start at $19,710 when it goes on sale in October, a price that positions it near the top of the funky-and-cheap segment of hatchback/crossover vehicles that includes the Kia Soul and Scion xD. The Juke's price tag includes a $750 destination charge.

    A top-of-the-line Juke SL with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive starts at $25,300. Nissan is offering 10 options with the Juke, including a $1,310 Sport package, $950 17-inch gunmetal wheels and a $390 rear roof spoiler.

    In comparison, a 2011 Scion xD starts at $15,765, including a $720 destination charge. A 2010 Kia Soul starts at $13,995, including a $695 destination charge.

    The Juke is available in eight models, all of which get a standard 188-horsepower 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine. Two transmissions are offered: a CVT and a six-speed manual transmission on the Juke SV FWD and Juke SL FWD models only.

    Inside Line says: Nissan positions the Juke at just under $20,000, which may be a bit of a gamble, given the competition. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

    @ed124c

    You're confused with the terms engineer and design. Design=pen -> paper -> resulting in an image. Engineering=chasis -> roof & body structure -> engine components, etc. Therefore, I stand corrected.

    @bankerdanny

    I remember seeing something towards the end of '09 beginning of '10, it was called "Worst designed vehicles of the decade" or some sort. The Aztek was ranked fairly high on that list. However, the key word was "ONE of the worst designed vehicles ever..." I just put emphasis on "ever". Ha!

    I thought the Rogue was pretty ugly when I first saw it, it's now one of the top 20 selling vehicles. Who knows how well this car will sell? Maybe this is the trend in vehicle design. I will have a better opinion when I drive and make some repairs.

    I may be in the minority but I like everything about this vehicle. If I were in the market for a small x-over, this would be my choice namely because that little 1.6 sounds pretty sweet.

    What if the VW Beetle had never been made, and then VW introduces the New Beetle in 2011.  Wouldn't there be "ugly" cries?

    What if there was a SC-FI movie coming out that featured the Juke as a contemporary car of thirty years from now.  Would we not, while watching the film, accept it as a car of the future, as we did the new Taurus in the movie Robocop?  The Taurus was a success because it was ahead of its time, but not too much ahead.

    Many manufacturers have come out with cars a little before their time, style-wise, beginning with the 1930s Chrysler Airflow.  It had a much smoother, more aerodynamic design, and it was a failure.

    If you look at 1930s cars, they pretty much look the same, but only to we in 2010 who are much more accustomed to today's styles.  I can't tell a 1930s Chevy from a Pontiac or Buick-- or even a Plymouth.  But we can tell the difference in styling of today's cars (less the Plymouth, of course)

    Nissan's only sin is bringing out a car that is probably a bit too far ahead of its "timeline".

    Who told Nissan that the Rogue was just too big and they need something smaller in their lineup?  And why does Nissan have 16 different models in their lineup?  Most of them don't sell very well at all.

    This crossover is very small, and the only attractive aspect is the engine, otherwise it does not make much sense at $20,000. Want a fast and practical crossover? .....Mazda CX-7 of course.

    I still believe that the Qashqai (with the 2.0L as the base engine, and the 1.6T as an option) would have been a better choice to compete in this segment in the US.

    My guess is that it will sell well at the beginning, but as the potential buyers realize how impractical it is, the sales (or the price) will drop fast.

    The Juke's engine is far more powerful than the junk in the Xb and the Soul.  And unlike the XB the juke is pulling 27 city (xb is 22) ad 32 highway (xb is a sad 28).  So more power by a nice jump, it's turbo and it gets pretty darn good mileage.  Why does the XB exist again?  Oh, like the TC it's to sell to a market who apparently doesn't care about power or fuel consumption.
