Nissan Prepares 2009 GT-R for Horsepower Certification

NASHVILLE — Nissan dealers are standing by to take orders for the highly anticipated 2009 Nissan GT-R in early January, but one selling point remains unclear: the GT-R's certified horsepower rating.

All the stated specifications up until now have been for the Japanese-market GT-R, which is expected to hit dealers later this week. It has been certified at 480 PS, which equates to 473 hp using the SAE standard in the U.S.

Nissan officials, however, said to expect the 480-hp SAE when the car arrives stateside in June. A Nissan engineer told Inside Line that GT-R project chief Kazutoshi Mizuno is "targeting 480 hp by U.S. testing standards." How that will be achieved is still being determined.

Nissan has already announced 2009 GT-R pricing will start at $69,850 for the base model, with a projected sales volume of just 1,500 cars per year.

What this means to you: Rest assured that when the GT-R hits U.S. dealers, it won't be outgunned by the Porsche 911 Turbo in the horsepower department. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor
