Nissan GT-R Sets New Record Lap Time at Nurburgring, Says Manufacturer

TOKYO — In what is sure to be a controversial announcement, Nissan on Thursday claimed that its GT-R has set a new record lap time at the Nürburgring circuit. Nissan said the latest lap time of 7 minutes, 26 seconds was set on April 23, besting the previous lap time of 7 minutes, 27 seconds on April 15.

Nissan did not provide such details as whether the GT-R was riding on standard Japan- market tires, whether it had any modifications or what the weather conditions were at the time.

"This record demonstrates our commitment to the continuous evolution of the Nissan GT-R," said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Nissan chief vehicle engineer and chief vehicle specialist in a statement.

Porsche accused Nissan of falsifying earlier claims of Nürburgring lap times in September 2008. The German automaker said it conducted its own test of the GT-R using no modifications and stock tires and achieved a best time of 7:54.
