Nissan Nismo Frontier Dumped for 2009

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Nissan confirmed for Inside Line on Tuesday that it will eliminate the Nismo Frontier from its 2009 lineup. The performance-oriented Frontier model is "going away in lieu of the PRO-4X off-road" model, said Nissan North America spokesman Darryll Harrison. The 2009 Nissan Frontier hits showrooms in mid-July; pricing will be announced at the end of June.

"There will be no more Nismo Nissan truck," Harrison said. "But we still have Nismo parts and the Nismo Z."

The thinking behind dumping the Nismo Frontier trim level was "consistency," according to the Japanese automaker. "We have the PRO-4X Nissan Titan," Harrison noted. "It's time to line up the truck trim levels. We want to be consistent."

The 2009 Frontier PRO-4X gets Bilstein off-road high-pressure shock absorbers, additional skid plates on the oil pan and transfer case, an electronic rear differential locker, two- or four-wheel limited-slip and 16-inch aluminum alloy off-road wheels with 16-inch BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires. Exterior design cues include a body-color grille and front fascia and badging. The cabin gets badging, unique seat stitching and different gauges.

The 2009 Frontier lineup gets a modest update with new front fascia grille and headlight design and new 16-inch and 18-inch wheels.

    The Frontier gets a carryover 4.0-liter DOHC V6 that makes 261 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. Transmissions include a five-speed automatic, a six-speed manual and a five-speed manual.

What this means to you: Fans of the Nismo Frontier may be a little dismayed, but you can console yourself with the PRO-4X model in 2009. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
