Nissan Recalls 2005-'09 Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra

WASHINGTON — Nissan is recalling 242,720 2005-'09 Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra vehicles sold in certain states because heavy road salt can rust a crash sensor, causing the front airbags to be disabled.

"This issue could result in the non-deployment of the driver and passenger front airbags in a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury," said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its recalls summary of the problem.

A mixture of snow, water and salt can enter into the front crash zone sensor housing on the affected vehicles, causing the sensor to rust. "If this happens, the red airbag warning light will illuminate to alert the vehicle operator," said NHTSA.

Nissan dealers will replace the sensor with a redesigned one. There is no start date yet for this recall. NHTSA said owners of the vehicles will receive extended warranty coverage of the sensor to 10 years. Owners can contact Nissan at (800) 647-7261.

Inside Line says: If you own any of the aforementioned vehicles, have it checked out ASAP with your dealer. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
