2002 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed
What's special about it?
For 2002, Nissan adds a 74.6-inch long bed to its Frontier Crew Cab. The automaker claims it's the longest bed available in the compact pickup class. To get a longer bed on a crew cab, it says, you'd have to go to a Ford F-250 crew cab. The idea is to offer young, active customers (Nissan's fave demographic) as much "dirty zone" as "clean zone" (interior), say company officials. The addition of the long bed adds 15 inches to the Frontier's regular 116.1-inch wheelbase for a total of 131.1 inches, the same as the Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. Nissan promises the long bed version of the Frontier will cost less than $500 more than the regular bed model. It will be offered with the same three engines as regular Frontiers: the 143-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder; the 170-horse 3.3-liter V6; and the 210-horsepower supercharged 3.3-liter V6.
Also new is an optional 400-watt, nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system that should satisfy even the most hardened head-banger. If it doesn't suffice, you may want to consult Rockford Fosgate, which was on hand with its version of a Frontier equipped with an astounding 4000-watt (yes, three zeroes), 14-speaker audio system with CD and MP3 capability.
Returning to reality, the knees of long-legged Frontier drivers will no longer have to do battle with the dash-mounted, umbrella-handled pull hand brake. It has been replaced with a foot-controlled parking brake for 2002.
Why should you care?
Light truck manufacturers are falling all over themselves to cater to the needs and desires of young, active people. These are the freaks you see in commercials, racing bikes down cliffs, going off falls in kayaks, bounding down forest paths and generally having fun. Who are these people? While we applaud their energy and appreciate the vehicles created for their use, we'd also like to see a vehicle that caters to the millions of overweight, lazy, unimaginative sloths who enjoy playing video games and chowing chips. -- Neil Dunlop
