LOS ANGELES--Nissan finally got the formula right for their compact pickup truck. At the beginning of the 1999 model year, they added a much-needed V6 engine to the Frontier. Now they have given buyers the option of getting a truck with four conventional doors.
The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is the first conventional four-door truck to hit the market. Available as a two- or four-wheel drive model, the Frontier Crew Cab is targeted at people who want the utility of a compact pickup, but who don't want to sacrifice interior space. Due to increased cab space, the beds of the Crew Cab models are noticeably shorter than either the Regular Cab or King Cab trucks.
Nissan builds all Crew Cabs on the four-wheel drive platform to give the truck increased structural rigidity. This means that two-wheel drive models now benefit from the same ground clearance and ride height as the four-wheel drive models.
All crew cabs are powered by Nissan's 3.3-liter V6 engine that makes 170 horsepower and 200 foot-pounds of torque. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel antilock brakes, and engine and fuel tank skid plates are also standard on all models.
Nissan expects the Frontier Crew Cab to steal some sales from the Frontier King Cab, but company officials are quick to acknowledge that it is better to have the sales stolen by another Nissan than to have them go to a competitor.
The Frontier Crew Cab will go on sale in May of 1999 as a 2000 model. Prices have not yet been determined.
