    What Is It?
    2004 Nissan Pathfinder Armada

    What's Special About It?
Contrary to what its name might suggest, the Pathfinder Armada is not a replacement for Nissan's long-running midsize SUV of the same name. The Pathfinder Armada is a full-size sport-ute that's built on the same platform as Nissan's new Titan full-size truck. Like the Titan, the Pathfinder rmada will come with a standard 5.6-liter V8 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission. Rated at 300-plus horsepower and 375-plus pound-feet of torque, the Armada has more than enough power to go up against its main rivals, namely the Toyota Sequoia, Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford. Like the Expedition, the Armada uses an independent rear suspension to provide a more comfortable ride and more room in the third-row seat. The smooth-riding setup doesn't compromise performance, however, as the Armada is capable of towing up to 9,100 pounds with the optional Big Tow package.

Inside, the Armada features a spacious cabin packed with all the latest convenience, entertainment and safety features. Both the second- and third-row seats can be folded flat into the floor while the front driver seat benefits from an eight-way power-adjustable seat with standard adjustable pedals. A full-length overhead console can be ordered with a DVD-entertainment system that can play through the Bose audio system or wireless headphones, while an optional DVD-based navigation system is available up front for keeping an eye on where you're headed. Some of the Armada's advanced safety features include a standard side curtain airbag that provides coverage for all three rows of seating, a stability control system with traction control and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Production of the Pathfinder Armada starts this fall at Nissan's new plant in Canton, Mississippi.

    Why Should You Care?
If you have a big family and need a vehicle that can swallow everybody up with room to spare, the Pathfinder Armada looks like it will do the job nicely. Although the full-size sport-ute segment has been largely dominated by GM and Ford, the success of Toyota's Sequoia proves that buyers won't shy away from a well-built Japanese contender. With its competitive size and powerful engine, the Armada looks like it will have little trouble making its own mark on this ever popular segment. — Ed Hellwig
